The front speakers (all three) have 6-foot cables the rear speakers have 15-foot cables the rear center has a 23-foot cable. The cables are hardwired to the satellites and have RCA terminations with which you connect them to the sub. Simple but effective, I still don't understand why Creative didn't throw this feature into the MegaWorks.

In this mode the rear center is simply a combination of sounds from the surround channels. This allows you to turn a 5.1 signal into 6.1 sound. Next to the inputs and outputs you will also find a small upmix switch. The analog configuration is the most common and the easiest to install, so it makes sense that Creative wouldn't opt for anything else. The rear center channel is routed on the same channel as the center and sub. Creative went for the traditional 6.1 analog inputs. The sub houses the amp and all of the inputs and outputs. The amp could be a little more robust, but I think it's a fair value considering the attractive price. Many contemporary systems are outfitted with absurdly powerful amps, but Creative had to keep the cost down somehow. While this isn't earth-shaking it is powerful enough to fill a bedroom or dorm room with clear sound. The sub, which is equipped with a 6.5-inch driver, pumps out 22 watts RMS. The front center channel gets 20 watts RMS and each of the others gets 8 watts RMS. Similarly, a special stand allows you to adjust the angle of the center channel. You'll find small stands on which you can mount the satellites for a different angle.

The satellites have angled bottoms and they naturally sit pitched a good bit upward by themselves. The system consists of six identical satellites, a sub woofer, and a wired remote control. In terms of design, the Inspires are pretty no nonsense.

These problems would be much more off-putting if not for the fantastic price. They perform acceptable well in some areas, but a few serious sonic problems blemish the overall package. However, if you're picky about sound the speakers might disappoint you. At a hair under $100.00 they offer tremendous value. If you are looking to jump to 6.1 but have a limited bankroll, then the Inspires deserve an audition. The Inspire 6.1 6600 speakers are not perfect speakers but they do a few things extremely well and are priced very competitively. If you are considering an Audigy 2 then be sure to check out some of the attractive bundles with the MegaWorks. (High-end equipment might be fun to drool over but much more money is made on "entry level" rigs.) Creative continues to push 6.1 very aggressively.

They were in fact launched before the MegaWorks, which was smart on the company's part. These conditions made it smart for Creative to release the Inspire 6.1 6600 speakers as quickly as possible.
